When batteries have been fully charged,
“FULL” scrolls across the display together
with plug symbol.After a few hours the word
“FULL” stops appearing and the display shows
the remaining shaving time in minutes along
with the plug symbol.

- The Numeric Display:
The number on the display shows remaining
shaving time in minutes.
C- The Battery Display:
The amount of filled in blocks in the battery
symbol shows the remaining shaving time or
battery power level.

C◗LCD Display
Allows you to choose the display mode you
personally prefer.There are two display modes
to choose from: a numeric or battery symbol
display.
C1Press the ON/OFF button for about 3
seconds.A key symbol appears on the
display.
2To select one of the two modes,press the
ON/OFF button briefly until the preferred
mode appears and wait a few seconds.You
will hear a beep to confirm your personal
choice.Changing your display is always
possible.
◗If you do not press the ON/OFF button,the
travel lock stays activated.(see “Storage”).
NOTE: For first time use of the razor, or after
non-use for one month or more, it could take
several minutes before the display appears!
The display provides the following
information:
When you turn the razor ON or OFF the
display will come on for approximately 10
seconds.

C◗Cleaning Indicator
The blinking faucet symbol will remind you that
razor heads need to be cleaned.This happens
after each shave.
C◗Replacement Head Indicator
Every year, depending on your shaving behavior,
after turning the razor OFF, the replacement
head symbol indicator starts to blink and you
will hear a beep.The replacement head symbol
will remain visible for the next 7 shaves to
remind you that with new shaving heads you
will guarantee yourself optimal shaving
performance.
◗You can reset the razor by pressing the
ON/Off button for 3 seconds while the
replacement head symbol is blinking. The
symbol then disappears,and you will hear a
short confirming beep.
◗If you do not reset the razor,after 7 shaves
the razor will automatically reset itself.
NOTE: If the display shows the word ‘CHECK’ and
a blinking replacement head symbol and faucet
symbol, clean the razor thoroughly before you
continue shaving (see ‘cleaning’). After cleaning, if
the word ‘CHECK’ and a blinking replacement
head symbol and faucet symbol remain on the
display, immediately replace the razor heads (see
‘replace the razor heads’).
◗Low Battery Indicator
C - The Numeric Display:
When the battery is running low, the plug
symbol and the minutes indicator will blink
after you have turned the razor OFF. You will
also hear a few short beeps. If this occurs while
shaving, you should have enough power to
complete your shave.When you turn razor ON
or OFF the display will come on for
approximately 10 seconds.
C- The Battery Display:
When the battery is running low, the plug and
battery symbols will blink after you turn
razor OFF. You will also hear a few short beeps.
When you turn razor OFF or ON the display
will stay on for approximately 10 seconds.
C◗Battery Empty
To indicate that the battery power is too low
to operate the razor,‘Lo’ appears on the display.
◗Demonstration Program
The razor has a demonstration program that
will run through the display of razor functions.
During the demonstration the razor will
automatically turn ON and OFF 2 times. To
activate, press and hold the ON/OFF button
for approximately 6 seconds. After 3 seconds
the lock symbol appears; keep the ON/OFF
button pressed.Then release the button and
the razor will continue through the
demonstration program.You can interrupt the
demonstration by pressing the ON/OFF button
again.

C3Replace clock module into underside of
stand(1). Turn clockwise to secure in
place (2).
To replace clock battery
C1Turn clock module counterclockwise (1)
and remove from stand (2).
C2Remove battery cover and then use a flat-
bladed screwdriver to lift out the battery.
C3Replace battery with 1.5V button cell
watch battery,placing rounded side of
battery into battery compartment,flat side
(+) facing out. Replace battery cover.
C4Replace clock module into stand (1) and
turn clockwise to secure in place (2).

Charge Meter
◗Charge Meter monitors amount of remaining
battery power and actual remaining shaving
minutes available. ‘Minutes Left’ is based on
the amount of power consumed shaving per
minute and is dependent upon your skin and
beard type,whether you use pre-shave lotion,
and how often the trimmer is used.
◗ Initially your razor may need to go through 2
or 3 full charge/recharge cycles before
“Minutes Left” indicator (numeric or battery)
begins to display your accurate“Shaving
Minutes Left.”
Charging Stand Clock
To set time
C1Turn clock module,located on underside
of stand,counterclockwise (1) to remove
from stand (2).
C2Press small,left button to set correct time.
The clock can only be set forward.

Placing or removing razor from
charging stand:
C◗Always place razor in stand in an upright
position making sure charging contacts in
bottom of stand fit into recess in bottom of
razor.
C◗Always remove razor from stand by lifting
straight up.Do not tilt razor.
◗Do not leave the charging stand with the
razor in it continuously plugged into outlet as
it would reduce life of batteries.If storing
razor in stand,remove the plug from outlet as
soon as the razor is fully charged.
C1 Connect cord directly to razor or place
razor in charging stand and connect the
small plug of cord to charging stand.
Connect the charging plug into any 100V
to 240V AC outlet.Use only the charging
plug provided.
◗An adaptor plug may be necessary for
charging plug usage in some foreign countries.
Use an attachment plug adaptor of the proper
configuration for the power outlet.
The charging plug will automatically convert to
work on 100V to 240V AC systems.
Before First Use
◗Charge the razor before you start using it
(see ‘Charging’). Make sure the razor is
switched off before you start charging it.
◗Remove any sticker or protective foil from
the LCD Display before using razor.

◗Only use the power plug and/or charging
stand provided to charge the razor.
◗The charging plug transforms 100 – 240V AC
to less than 24V DC.
Charging
◗Battery performance is best if you recharge
only when the batteries are (almost)
completely empty.
◗Charging or recharging at temperatures below
40ºF or higher than 95ºF adversely affects
lifetime of batteries.
◗Continuously recharging or continuously using
as a corded razor will reduce life of batteries.
◗You may also shave using the charging plug
provided.This razor will not recharge while
being used corded.
◗Do not charge razor in a pouch.
◗Recharge only when the plug symbol starts
blinking.This symbol may appear when your
razor is ON or OFF.
◗Do not charge/recharge or use razor corded
until fully dried.

more difficult to adapt to the Philips Norelco
shaving system.

Personal Comfort Control
C◗Your SmartTouch razor has 3 adjustable
settings that allow you to personalize your
shave for your specific skin type from sensitive
to normal skin. You can select your personal
comfort control setting by turning the dial.
Each setting is indicated by a “click”.
2 First time charging and recharging after
non-use for 1 month or more requires a
full 4 hours. A fully charged razor has a
cordless shaving time of up to 30 days.
When batteries are fully charged, the word
“FULL” scrolls across the display.After a few hours
the word “FULL” stops appearing and the display
shows the remaining shaving time in minutes
along with the plug symbol.
Recharging
1First time charging requires 4 hours. After
initial charge,recharging requires 1 hour.
Recharge only when the plug symbol starts
blinking.This symbol may appear when your razor
is ON or OFF.
C2When razor is fully charged,disconnect
the charging plug from outlet.
Do not keep razor or charging stand permanently
plugged into outlet. If using charging stand, always
remove razor from stand by lifting straight up. Do
not tilt razor.
Quick Charge
When batteries are totally depleted, recharging
the razor for approximately 3 minutes gives
enough energy for a 3-minute cordless shave.

Trimming
To groom sideburns and moustache:
1Turn razor ON.
C2Push down spring-release trimmer switch.
The trimmer can be activated while the razor is
running.
C3Hold trimmer as shown and move in
downward strokes with gentle pressure.
C4Close trimmer by pressing trimmer down.
5Turn razor OFF.
Choose a comfort control setting:
C◗For Sensitive Skin:
Choose comfort control setting “S” to relax
the spring and pressure of the floating heads
against your skin for a gentler,more
comfortable shave.
C◗For Normal Skin:
Choose comfort control setting “N” to
tighten the spring and pressure of the floating
heads against your skin for a faster shave.
◗The in-between position is best suited for
skin types between normal and sensitive.
C◗The display shows the position selected.
How To Shave With An Electric Razor
◗Use this razor for its intended household use
as described in this manual.
◗Shaving with a clean,dry face gives the best
results.
C1Turn razor ON by pressing the on/off
button once.Shave against the direction of
beard growth using both straight and
circular movements.
2Stretch your skin with your free hand so
blades can lift and cut whiskers.Gently
press razor to skin so the floating heads

1Always turn razor OFF,unplug from outlet
and remove cord from razor or charging
stand before cleaning.
C2Press the Razor Head Release Button,flip
open the Razor Head Assembly.
C3Clean inside razor heads and hair chamber
by running under hot water.
C4Clean outside of Razor Head Assembly by
running under hot water.
5Close the Razor Head Assembly and shake
off excess water.
C6Open Razor Head assembly again and
leave open to air dry.
NOTE: Do not wipe or dry the shaving heads
with a towel or tissue.This could damage the
shaving heads.
C7If the shaving unit becomes detached from
the shaver,you can easily reattach it.
Cleaning
C◗The tap symbol on the back of the razor
indicates that the razor can be rinsed under
running tap water.
◗Regular cleaning guarantees better shaving
results.
◗Always switch Razor OFF and remove from
charging stand before cleaning.
◗Never clean,remove or replace head
assembly while motor is on.
◗Do not apply pressure to combs. Do not
touch razor heads with hard objects as this
may dent or damage precision-made slotted
combs.
◗Do not use razor if combs are damaged or
broken. Facial injury may occur.
◗Unplug the charging stand. The charging stand
may be wiped clean using a damp cloth.
C1The faucet symbol will start blinking after
each shave to remind you that the razor
needs to be cleaned.
Cleaning: Razor Heads
The easiest and most hygienic way to clean the
razor heads is to rinse them after each use or
at least once a week with hot water: Water
from the tap should be on a hot setting, BUT
BE CAREFUL TO TEST W A TER FIRST SO AS
NOT TO BURN OR SC ALD HANDS.
◗Regular cleaning guarantees better shaving
results.

Do not clean more than one cutter and comb at
a time, since they are all matching sets. If you
accidentally interchange the cutters and combs, it
could take several weeks before optimal shaving
performance is restored.
C6Replace the set back into the Razor Head
Assembly so that the ‘wings’ on the comb
fit within the brackets located towards the
center of the Assembly.
The set will only fit into the Razor Head Assembly
if the ‘wings’ are between the brackets. Make sure
that the two pointy edges of the head fit exactly
into the recesses.
7Repeat the process for the other two sets
of cutters and combs.
8Replace the frame.
C9Press down (1) and turn wheel clockwise
(2) until it locks into place.
10 Close the Razor Head Assembly.
Once A Month: Razor Heads
For optimum performance, razor cutters and
combs should be cleaned in a degreasing liquid
(e.g. Philips Norelco Razor Cleaner, model
RC1776, or rubbing alcohol) and lubricated with
Philips Norelco Razor Lubricant, model AL80, or
one drop of mineral oil (in the center of the
head). This helps prevent wear of the shaving
heads.
8You may also clean the hair chamber
without water by using the supplied brush.
Once A Month: Razor Heads
Do not mix up the cutters and combs as the
shaving performance may be adversely affected
for several weeks before optimal shaving
performance is restored.
1Turn razor OFF,remove the charging plug
from the outlet and cord from the razor
or charging stand.
C2Press the razor head release button to
open the razor head assembly.
C3Turn the wheel counterclockwise (1) and
remove the retaining frame (2).
C4Remove and clean one set of cutters and
combs at a time.
C5Separate the cutter from the comb and
rinse clean under hot water.

Storage
C◗The razor can be placed in the charging stand
for safe storage.If storing razor in stand,
remove the plug from outlet as soon as the
razor is fully charged.
◗Be sure razor is turned off.Remove cord from
outlet and razor or charging stand before
storing in a safe,dry location where it will not
be crushed,banged,or subject to damage.
◗Do not wrap cord around razor or charging
stand when storing.
◗Store cord in a safe location where it will not
be cut or damaged.
◗Do not keep razor or charging stand
permanently plugged into outlet.
◗Do not place or store razor or charging stand
where it can fall or be pulled into a tub or
sink,water or other liquid while plugged in.
C◗Put the Protective Razor Head Cap on razor
to protect heads.
Travel Lock
If you are going to travel, it is possible to lock the
razor.The travel lock prevents the razor from
being switched on by accident.
Activating the travel lock
C◗ Press the ON/OFF button for 3 seconds.
The razor is switched OFF and the key symbol
rotates once.The travel lock is now activated.
After Each Use: Trimmer
1Turn razor OFF.
2Push down spring-release trimmer switch.
C3Clean trimmer with the brush every time
you use it.
C4Lubricate the trimmer teeth with Philips
Norelco Razor Lubricant (model AL80) or
with one drop of mineral oil every 6
months.
5Close trimmer by pressing trimmer down.
This razor has no other user-serviceable parts.
Any other service should be performed by the
Philips Norelco Service Location.
Replacing the Razor Heads
◗Replace the razor heads once a year for
optimal shaving results.
◗Replace damaged or worn razor heads with
model HQ9 Philips Norelco razor heads only.
Razor head check indication
◗The replacement head indicator symbol starts
blinking to remind you to check if it’s time to
replace your razor heads to obtain optimal
shaving results.
