Der Schiefe Turm von Pisa
Im Jahre 1173 wurde der Grundstein des Campanile – des Glockenturms
des Doms von Pisa – gelegt. Ganz aus weißem Carrara-Marmor, sollte er
100 m hoch und das Glanzstück der Anlage auf dem Platz der Wunder
werden. Doch der Architekt Bonanno Pisano hatte die Rechnung ohne
den zu weichen Boden gemacht: Bereits beim Bau der dritten Etage
begann der Turmstumpf sich zu neigen. Erst 200 Jahre später konnte
er nach mehrfachen Baustopps mit einer Höhe von 54 m fertig gestellt
werden.
1838 wurde der Turm durch Abpumpen des Grundwassers beinahe zu
Fall gebracht. Daraufhin kippte er jährlich um einen Millimeter weiter,
bis die Neigung 1990 fast 4,5 m betrug und akute Einsturzgefahr be-
stand. Er wurde für die Öffentlichkeit gesperrt. Nach etlichen geschei-
terten Rettungsversuchen des Turms fand der englische Techniker John
Burland 1998 schließlich die Lösung: Unter der hoch stehenden Nord-
seite wurde behutsam Erdreich entfernt und der Turm begann sich
aufzurichten. Bis 2001 wurde die Neigung auf etwa 4 m verringert. Der
Campanile wurde wieder geöffnet und gilt nun für die nächsten 300
Jahre als gesichert.
Leaning Tower of Pisa
In 1173 the cornerstone of the Campanile, the bell tower of Pisa, was
laid. Constructed of white Carrara marble, it was to be 100 m (328 ft)
high and the jewel of the complex on the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of
Miracles). The architect, Bonanno Pisano made his calculations without
considering the softness of the ground, so that by the construction of
the third story it began to lean. It was not until 200 years later and many
disruptions that it was fi nally fi nished at 54 m (177 ft) high.
In 1838 the tower almost collapsed from the pumping of ground
water. After that, the tower began to lean 1 millimeter more each year.
The angle had reached almost 4.5 m (15 ft) by 1990 and was dangerously
close to collapse and was closed to the public. After many unsuccessful
attempts to correct the situation, a British professor of soil engineering,
John Burland fi nally discovered the solution in 1998: beneath the eleva-
ted north side soil was carefully removed and the tower began to right
itself slightly. By 2001 the angle was reduced by about 50 cm (19.5 in-
ches). The Campanile was reopened again and should remain stable for
the next 300 years.

de 100 m de haut devait être le joyau de la place des Miracles. Mais
l’architecte Bonanno Pisano avait fait ses calculs sans tenir compte du
sol trop meuble : dès la construction du troisième étage, le sommet de
la tour commença à pencher. Ce n’est que 200 ans et plusieurs interrup-
tions de chantier plus tard que la tour fut achevée… à 54 m.
En 1838, un pompage de la nappe phréatique faillit provoquer
l’écroulement de la tour. Par la suite, l’inclinaison de la tour augmenta
de 1 mm par an, pour atteindre 4,5 m en 1990, menaçant gravement de
s’effondrer. Son accès fut interdit au public. Après diverses tentatives de
sauvetage de la tour, le professeur anglais John Burland trouva enfi n la
solution en 1998 : on enleva avec précaution de la terre sous la partie
nord surélevée et la tour commença à se redresser. En 2001, l’inclinaison
n’était plus que de 4 m. Le campanile fut réouvert et son avenir assuré
pour les 300 prochaines années.

co di Carrara avrebbe dovuto diventare, con i suoi 100 m di altezza, il

l’architetto Bonanno Pisano non aveva tenuto conto del terreno trop-
po morbido: il troncone della torre cominciò ad inclinarsi già durante la
costruzione del terzo piano. Soltanto 200 anni più tardi e dopo ripetute
soste durante la costruzione fu possibile portarla a termine ad una al-
tezza di 54 m.
Nel 1838 la torre rischiò quasi di cadere a causa del drenaggio dell’acqua
sotterranea. Da quella volta si piegò ogni anno di circa un millimetro,
fi no a quando l’inclinazione non raggiunse i 4,5 m nel 1990 e ci furo-
no dei seri rischi che crollasse. Venne chiusa al pubblico. Dopo vari e
reiterati tentativi di salvare la torre il tecnico inglese John Burland trovò
fi nalmente una soluzione: sotto il lato Nord, che era quello che sporgeva
in fuori, si cominciò a rimuovere con attenzione della terra e la torre
iniziò a raddrizzarsi. Nel 2001 l’inclinazione venne ridotta a circa 4 m.
Il campanile fu riaperto e adesso potrà essere sicuro per i prossimi 300
anni.

En el año 1173 se colocó la primera piedra del Campanile, la torre del
campanario de la catedral de Pisa. Construida en su totalidad con
mármol blanco de Carrara, debía tener una altura de 100m y ser la
pieza maestra de la Plaza de los Milagros. Sin embargo, el arquitecto
Bonanno Pisano había hecho los cálculos sin tener en cuenta el suelo,
que era demasiado blando: Ya al construir el tercer piso la torre empe-
zó a inclinarse. No fue hasta 200 años más tarde cuando se acabó de
construir con una altura de 54 m, después de varias paradas de obra.
En 1838 casi se desmorona la torre debido a la extracción con bomba
de las aguas subterráneas. A partir de entonces, la torre se inclinó un
milímetro más cada año, hasta que la inclinación en 1990 era ya de casi
4,5 m y había peligro de derrumbamiento. Se cerró al público y, tras algu-
nos intentos fallidos para salvar la torre, el técnico inglés John Burland
encontró por fi n en 1998 la solución: Se eliminó cuidadosamente tierra
de debajo de la parte elevada norte y la torre empezó a enderezarse. En
2001 se había conseguido ya reducir la inclinación a unos 4 m. El Cam-
panile se volvió a abrir al público y se ha asegurado para los próximos
300 años.

mer, moest hij 100 m hoog en het pronkstuk van het “Plein van de won-
deren” (Piazza dei Miracoli) worden. Maar de architect Bonanno Pisano
had de berekening gemaakt zonder rekening te houden met de te zach-
te bodem: al bij de bouw van de derde etage begon de toren te hellen.
Pas 200 jaar later kon de toren na meerdere bouwstops met een hoogte
van 54 m worden afgebouwd. In 1838 viel de toren door het afpompen
van grondwater bijna om. Vervolgens kantelde hij jaarlijks een millime-
ter verder, tot de helling in 1990 bijna 4,5 m bedroeg en acuut instor-
tingsgevaar dreigde. De toren werd voor het publiek gesloten. Na enkele
mislukte reddingspogingen van de toren vond de Engels technicus John
Burland in 1998 de oplossing: onder de hoog staande noordelijke kant
werd behoedzaam bodem verwijderd en de toren richtte zich weer op.
Tot 2001 werd de helling verminderd tot ongeveer 4 m. De campanile
werd weer geopend en geldt nu voor de volgende 300 jaar als veilig.
