Overview
The APC® by Schneider Electr ic service bypass panel (SBP) , pr ovides util ity power to connected
equipment during UPS maintenanc e.
Inventory
Read the Safety Guide before installing the UPS.
Inspect the SBP upon receipt. Notify the carrie r and dealer if ther e is damage.
The package is recyc lable; save it for reuse or dispose of it prope rly.

Electrical Specifications
Note: The table above represents the electrical ratings of the SBP and not those of the UPS.
UPS wire specifications may vary. The SBP requires a m inimum wire size of 25 m m 2 and a
maximum wire size of 50 mm2. Refer to the UPS user manual for UPS wiring speci ficati ons.
SBP ratings must be equal to or greater than those of the UPS to which it is connected.
The input circuit breaker should not exceed the rat ing recommended on the UPS.
The system load must not exceed the electrical rating of the UPS. For example, if a 3840 VA
SBP is used with a 3000 VA UPS the maximum load that the system will support is 3000 VA.
Environmental Specifications
Changes and modifications to this unit not express ly approved by APC could

Installation
Stack configuration
Rack-mo unt configurat ion
Always place the SBP above the external battery packs and the UPS.
Four ornamental screws (sup plied), must be used to secure each tie
bracke t to the units, (see diagra m).
Install rails in rack

Wall-mount configuration
Secure the wall-mount brackets to the unit using eigh t
ornamental screws (supplied), four in ea ch bracket.
Secure the SBP to the wall. Select screws (not supplied),
that are appropriate for the weight of the u nit and the
mount ing surface materi al.

Hardwire the SBP
Hardwiring must be performed by a qualified electrician.
Adhere to all national and local electrical codes.
Switch the utility circuit breaker off.
Remove the terminal block access panel located on top
of the unit.
On all models, remove the access panel with three
knockout pieces.
Remov e al l three knockout pieces from the panel.
Model SBP20KP has two access panels. Remove both
of the access panels.
Remov e al l three knockout pieces from the small pan el.
Remov e one of the knockout pi ec es from the la rge panel.
S trip 24 mm (1 inch), of insulati on from the c able ends.
Inse rt cables through the holes in the ac cess panel(s) .
Conn ec t the ground te rminal first.
Install an approp ria te strai n relie f (not s upplied ), on eac h
cable.
Secure the cables i n th e terminal blocks. Refer to th e
term inal block configurations on the following page.
Use the Allen wrench supplied to tighten the te rminal
block scre ws.
Torqu e terminals to 6 Nm (53 in-lb ) minimum,
8 Nm (71 in-lb) maximum.
Rep l ace th e acce s s p an el ( s) usi n g al l of the s crew s
remov ed in the previous steps. Failure to do so may
resu lt in personal inj ury or equipment damage.

Operation
Normal mode
While the SBP operates in normal mode, power is supplied to connect ed equipment from the UPS
providing protection from power variat ions and disturbances .
Test mode
1. S w it ch th e U P S to Bypass mode. Verify that no UPS fault conditions exist. In the event that a fault
condition exists, ref er to th e u ser manuals for the UPS an d SBP.
2. Switch the SBP to Test mode.
Note: While t he SBP is in Test mode connected e qui pment rec eives direct utility p ower a nd is
not protected by the UPS.
The UPS will continue to receive input utility power.
The Equipment Protection Policy is not valid while the SBP i s opera ting in Test mode.
Bypass mode
Bypass mode enables connected equipment to operate on utility power while UPS maintenance is
performed.
While in SBP Bypass mode the UPS will not receive utility input power. The UPS wil l rec eive batter y
power while in SBP Bypass m ode. Refer to the UPS use r manual for shutdown procedures.
Note: Connected equipment is not protected by the UPS while the SBP is in Bypass mode.
The Equipment Protection Policy is not valid while the SBP i s opera ting in Bypass mode.
Reconnect SBP to UPS
Bypass mode
1. Put the SBP in Bypass mode.
2. Correct ly configure the input, out put and batte r y connections on the UPS.
DO NOT turn on the UPS at this time.
Test mode
1. S w it ch th e S B P to Test mode.
a.T he connected equipm ent will receive dir ect input uti lity power.
b.T he UPS wil l rec eive input utility power.
2. Verify t hat no UPS faul t condit ion s exist. In the event tha t a fault conditi on exi sts, re fer to the use r manuals
for the UPS and SBP.
3. Turn on the UPS output power.
Normal mode
1. Switch the UPS to Bypass mode. Verify that no UPS fault cond itions exist. In the event that a fault
condition exists, ref er to th e u ser manuals for the UPS an d SBP.
2. S w it ch th e S B P to Normal mode.
3. S w it ch th e U P S to Online mode. Verify th at no UPS fault conditions exist. In the event that a fault
condition exists, ref er to th e u ser manuals for the UPS an d SBP.
The SBP will now supply powe r to con nected equipm ent from the UPS pr oviding pr otection f rom power
variations and disturbances.

Problem and/or Possible Cause Solution
UPS will not turn on
SBP is in Bypass mode. Rot ate th e SB P sw it ch to TEST.
There is no power at the UPS input. Verify that the powe r ca bles from the SBP to the u tility power, and from
the SBP to the UPS input are se curel y connected.
UPS is faulty or damag ed. Rotate the SBP switch to Test. If the connected equ ipment is en ergized,
the UPS may be fau lty. Refer to T r oubl eshooting in t he UP S user man ual
for detailed in f o r m atio n.
There is no p o w er at the ut ility power outlet. Ro tate th e SBP switc h to Test. If the connec ted equipm ent does not
become energized, the util ity power outlet may be faulty. Verify th e
util it y power suppl y. Contac t a qua lif ied el ectri ci an to c heck t he building
electr i cal pow er.
UPS is Online; not providing power to connected equipment
SBP output circuit bre aker has tripped. Disconnect all nonesse ntial equipment from the SBP. Reset the SBP
circuit breaker.
There is no SBP output power. Verify that the powe r cable from the SBP to the UPS output is secure ly
connected.

Service
If the unit requires service, do not return it to the dealer. Follow these steps:
1. Review the Troubleshooting section of the ma n u al to eliminate com mon pr o b lems.
2. If the problem persists, contact APC Customer Support through the APC Web site, www.apc.com.
a.Not e the model number and se rial number a nd the date of purc hase . The model and seri al numbers are
located on the rea r panel of the unit a nd are available through the LCD display on select models.
b.Call APC Customer Support an d a te chnician will attempt to solve the problem over the phone. If this
is not possible, the te chnician will issue a Retu r n ed Mate ria l A uthorization Number (RMA#).
c.If the uni t is unde r warran ty, the repairs are free.
d.Service procedures and re turns may vary internationally. Refer to the APC Web sit e for c ountry
sp ec if i c in s t r u ct io n s .
3. Pack the unit in its original packaging. If this is not available, refer to www.apc.com to obtain a new set.
a.Pack the unit properly to avoid damage in transit. Never us e foam beads for packaging. Damage
sustained in transit is not covered under warra nty.
b.F or the UPS, always DISCONNECT THE BATTERY befor e shipping in compliance with U.S.
Departm ent of Transp ortation (DOT) and IATA regulations . T h e b attery may r emain in the unit.
c.Internal ba tteries may re main connected in t he XLBP during shipment, (if applicable, not all units
have XLBP s).
4. W r ite the RMA# provided by Customer Support on the outs ide of the package.
5. Return the unit by insured, pre-paid carrier to the addres s provided by Customer Support.
Transport the unit
1. Shut down and discon nec t all con nected equipment.
2. Discon nec t the unit from utility power.
3. Disconnect all internal and external b atteries (if applicable).
4. Follow the shipping instructions outlined in the Service section of this manual.
Two-Year Factory Warranty
This warranty applies only to the products you purcha s e for your use in accordance with this manual.
Terms of warranty
APC warrants its products to be free from defects in materials and wor kmanship for a pe riod of two
years from the date of purcha se. APC will repair or replace defective products covered by this warran ty.
This warranty does not apply to equipment that has been damaged by accident, ne gligence or
misapplication or has been alter ed or modified in any way. Repair or replacement of a defect ive product
or part ther eof does not exte nd the original wa rrant y peri od. Any pa rts f urnished un der t his war ranty may
be new or factory-remanufactured.
Non-transferable warranty
This warranty ex tends only to the origi nal purcha ser who must have properly r egister ed the product . The
product may be registered at the APC Web site , www.apc.com.

Exclusions
APC shall not be liable under the warranty if its testing a nd examination disclose tha t the alleged defect
in the product does not exist or was caused by end user’s or any third person’s mis use, negligence,
improper installation or testing. Further, APC shall not be liable under the warra nty for unauthoriz ed
attempts to repair or modify wron g or inadequate electr ical volta ge or connecti on, inappropria te on-site
operation conditions, corrosive atmosphere, repair, in stallation, exposure to the elements, Acts of God,
fire, theft, or instal lation contr ary to APC re commendati ons or specific ations or in any event if the APC
serial number has bee n altered, defaced, or removed, or any other c ause beyond th e range of the intend ed
use.
THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, BY OPERATION OF LAW OR
OTHERWISE, OF PRODUCTS SOLD, SERVICED OR FURNISHED UNDER THIS
AGREEMENT OR IN CONNECTION HEREWITH. APC DISCLAIMS ALL IMPLIED
WARRANT IES OF MERCHANTABILITY, SATISFACTION AND FITNESS FOR A
PAR TICULAR PURPOSE. APC EXPRESS WARRANTIES WILL NOT BE ENLARGED,
DIMINISHED, OR AFFECTED BY AND NO OBLIGATION OR LIABILITY WILL ARISE
OUT OF, APC RENDERING OF TECHNICAL OR OTHER ADVICE OR SERVICE IN
CONNECTION WITH THE PRODUCTS. THE FOREGOING WARRANTIES AND
REMEDIES ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND
REMEDIES. THE WARRANTIES SET FORTH ABOVE CONSTITUTE APC’S SOLE
LIABILITY AND PURCHASER’S EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR ANY BREACH OF SUCH
WARRANTIES. APC WARRANTIES EXTEND ONLY TO PURCHASER AND ARE NOT
EXTENDED TO ANY THIRD PARTIES.
IN NO EVENT SHALL APC, ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, AFFILIATES OR EMPLOYEES
BE LIABLE FOR ANY FORM OF INDIRECT, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE
DAMAGES, ARISING OUT OF THE USE, SERVICE OR INSTALLATION, OF THE
PRODUCTS, WHETHER SUCH DAMAGES ARISE IN CONTRACT OR TORT,
IRRESPECTIVE OF FAULT, NEGLIGENCE OR STRICT LIABILITY OR WHETHER APC
HAS BEEN ADVISED IN ADVANCE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

REVENUE, LOSS OF EQUIPMENT, LOSS OF USE OF EQUIPMENT, LOSS OF SOFTWARE,
LOSS OF DATA, COSTS OF SUBSTITUENTS, CLAIMS BY THIRD PARTIES, OR
OTHERWISE.
