Disconnect the AC power and peripherals before cleaning. Wipe the Desktop PC using a clean
cellulose sponge or chamois cloth dampened with solution of nonabrasive detergent and a few
drops of warm water then remove any extra moisture with a dry cloth.

damaged.
• DO NOT expose to dirty or dusty environments. DO NOT operate during a gas leak.
• DO NOT place or drop objects on top and do not shove any foreign objects into the Desktop
PC.

• DO NOT expose to or use near liquids, rain, or moisture. DO NOT use the modem during

Slim ODD. This bay is for a slim size optical drive.
Power button. Press this button to turn the system on.
Headphone port. This Line In (lime) port connects a headphone with a stereo mini-
plug.
Microphone port. This Mic (pink) port connects a microphone.
USB 3.0 ports. These two 9-pin Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports are available for
connecting USB 3.0/2.0 devices.

Microphone port (pink). This port connects a microphone.
Line Out port (lime). This port connects a headphone or a speaker. In 4.1-channel,
5.1-channel, and 7.1-channel configurations, the function of this port becomes Front
Speaker Out.
Line In port (light blue). This port connects to a tape, CD, DVD player, or other audio
sources.

Chassis fan vent. This vent is for the fan that provides ventilation inside the system
chassis.
Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) port. This 15-pin port is for a VGA monitor or other VGA-
compatible devices.
Use a VGA card in one slot height, otherwise it cannot be installed in the chassis.
Power supply unit fan vent. This vent is for the PSU fan that provides ventilation inside
the power supply unit.
Power connector. This connector is for the power cable and plug.

Setting up your computer
This section guides you through connecting the main hardware devices, such as the external
monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord, to your computer.
Connecting an external monitor
Using the ASUS Graphics Card (on selected models only)
Connect your monitor to the display output port on the discrete ASUS Graphics Card.
To connect an external monitor using the ASUS Graphics Card:
1. Connect a monitor to a display output port on the ASUS Graphics Card.
2. Plug the monitor to a power source.
The display output ports on the ASUS Graphics Card may vary with different models.

Using the onboard display output ports
Connect your monitor to the onboard display output port.
To connect an external monitor using the onboard display output ports:
1. Connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port, or a DVI-D monitor to the DVI-D port, or an HDMI
monitor to the HDMI port on the rear panel of your computer.
2. Plug the monitor to a power source.

Connect a USB keyboard and a USB mouse to the USB ports on the rear panel of your computer.

Connecting a USB storage device
This desktop PC provides USB 2.0/1.1 and USB 3.0 ports on both the front and rear panels. The USB
ports allow you to connect USB devices such as storage devices.
To connect a USB storage device:
• InserttheUSBstoragedevicetoyourcomputer.

To remove a USB storage device on Windows® 8.1:
1. From the Start screen, click Desktop to launch the Desktop Mode.
2. Click from the taskbar, then click Eject [Name of USB Drive].

device from your computer.

Connecting devices to your computer
Windows® 10
To remove a USB storage device on Windows® 10:
1. Click , then click from the Windows taskbar on your computer, then click Eject.
2. When the Safe to Remove Hardware message pops up, remove the USB storage device
from your computer.
DO NOT remove a USB storage device when data transfer is in progress. Doing so may cause data
loss or damage the USB storage device.
Connecting microphone and speakers
This desktop PC comes with microphone ports and speaker ports on both the front and rear panels.
The audio I/O ports located on the rear panel allow you to connect 2.1-channel, 4.1-channel,
5.1-channel and 7.1-channel stereo speakers.

during POST. The dual display function works only under Windows.
Connecting multiple external displays
Your desktop PC may come with VGA, HDMI, or DVI ports and allows you to connect multiple
external displays.
When a graphics card is installed in your computer, connect the monitors on the output ports of
the graphics card.
Setting up multiple displays
When using multiple monitors, you are allowed to set display modes. You can use the additional
monitor as a duplicate of your main display, or as an extension to enlarge your Windows desktop.
To set up multiple displays:
1. Turn off your computer.
2. Connect the two monitors to your computer and connect the power cords to the monitors.
Refer to Setting up your computer section in Chapter 1 for details on how to connect a
monitor to your computer.

Connect a High Definition TV (HDTV) to the HDMI port of your computer.

Using your computer
Proper posture when using your Desktop PC
When using your Desktop PC, maintaining the proper posture is necessary to prevent strain to your
wrists, hands, and other joints or muscles. This section provides you with tips on avoiding physical
discomfort and possible injury while using and fully enjoying your Desktop PC.

To maintain the proper posture:
• Positionyourcomputerchairtomakesurethatyourelbowsareatorslightlyabovethe
keyboard to get a comfortable typing position.
• Adjusttheheightofyourchairtomakesurethatyourkneesareslightlyhigherthanyour
hips to relax the backs of your thighs. If necessary, use a footrest to raise the level of your
knees.
• Adjustthebackofyourchairsothatthebaseofyourspineisrmlysupportedandangled
slightly backward.
• Situprightwithyourknees,elbowsandhipsatanapproximately90ºanglewhenyouareat
the PC.
• Placethemonitordirectlyinfrontofyou,andturnthetopofthemonitorscreenevenwith
your eye level so that your eyes look slightly downward.
• Keepthemouseclosetothekeyboard,andifnecessary,useawristrestforsupportto
reduce the pressure on your wrists while typing.
• UseyourDesktopPCinacomfortably-litarea,andkeepitawayfromsourcesofglaresuchas
windows and straight sunlight.
• Takeregularmini-breaksfromusingyourDesktopPC.
To use the memory card:
1. Insert the memory card into the card slot.
• Amemorycardiskeyedsothatittsinonlyonedirection.DONOTforceacardintoaslotto
avoid damaging the card.
• Youcanplacemediainoneormoreofthecardslotsanduseeachmediaindependently.Place
only one memory card in a slot at one time.
2. Select a program from the AutoPlay window to access your files.
• OnWindows®8.1,ifAutoPlayisNOTenabledinyourcomputer,hoveryourmousepointerover

Using the optical drive
Inserting an optical disc
To insert an optical disc:
1. While your system is on, press the eject button to open the tray.
2. Place the disc on the optical drive with the label side outward if the desktop is positioned
vertically and the label side up if the desktop is positioned horizontally.
3. Push the tray gently to close it.
4. Select a program from the AutoPlay window to access your files.
If AutoPlay is NOT enabled in your computer, to access the data on an optical disc:
• OnWindows® 8.1, hover your mouse pointer over the lower left corner of Windows®
desktop then right-click on the Start screen’s thumbnail. From the popup menu, click File
Explorer, and then double-click the CD/DVD drive icon.
• OnWindows® 10, click File Explorer from the Start menu, then double-click the CD/DVD
drive icon.
Removing an optical disc
To remove an optical disc:
1. While the system is on, do either of the following to eject the tray:
• Presstheejectbuttonbelowthedrivebaycover.
• EjectthetrayfromWindows®8.1/10system:

Using Windows® 8.1
Starting for the first time
When you start your computer for the first time, a series of screens appear to guide you in
configuring the basic settings of your Windows® 8.1 operating system.
To start your Desktop PC for the first time:
1. Press the power button on your Desktop PC. Wait for a few minutes until the setup screen
appears.
2. From the setup screen, pick a language to use on your Desktop PC. As other settings appear,
select your country or region, app language, keyboard layout, and time zone then tap Next.
3. Carefully read the License Terms, then tap I Accept.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to configure the following basic items:

5. After configuring the basic items, the Windows®8.1 tutorial appears. Watch this to learn more

The Windows® User Interface (UI) is the tile-based display used in Windows® 8.1. It includes the
following features you can use while working on your Desktop PC.
Start screen
The Start screen appears after successfully signing in to your user account. It helps organize all the

The Charms bar is a toolbar that can be triggered on the right side of your screen. It consists of
several tools that allow you to share applications and provide quick access for customizing the
settings of your Desktop PC.

When called out, the Charms bar initially appears as a set of white icons. The image above shows
how the Charms bar looks like once activated.
Use your Desktop PC’s mouse or keyboard to launch the Charms bar.

The Snap feature displays two apps side-by-side, allowing you to work or switch between apps.
Ensure that your Desktop PC’s screen resolution is set to 1366 x 768 pixels or higher before using

5. Select Only the drive where the Windows is installed.
6. Select Just remove my files.

To create a USB recovery drive:
1. Launch the Control Panel from the All Apps screen.
For details, refer to Launching the All Apps screen under Working with Windows® apps.
2. From the Control Panel’s System and Security, click Find and fix problems.
3. Click Recovery> Create a recovery
drive.
4. Click Copy the recovery partition
from the PC to the recovery drive,
and then click Next.
5. Select the USB storage device where
you want to copy the recovery files.
6. Click Next.
7. Click Create. Wait for a while for the
process to complete.
8. When the process is completed, click
Finish.

Removing everything and reinstalling Windows
Restoring your PC to its original factory settings can be done using the Remove everything and
reinstall option s in PC Settings. Refer to the steps below to use this option.
Back up all your data before using this option.
This process may take a while to complete.
1. Launch the Charm bar.
2. Click Settings>PC Settings> Update and recovery > Recovery.
3. Scroll down to view the Remove everything and reinstall Windows option. Under this
option, click Get Started.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the reinstallation and reset process.

Entering the BIOS Setup
BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) stores system hardware settings that are needed for system
startup in the Desktop PC.
In normal circumstances, the default BIOS settings apply to most conditions to ensure optimal
performance. Do not change the default BIOS settings except in the following circumstances:
• Anerrormessageappearsonthescreenduringthesystembootupandrequestsyoutorun
the BIOS Setup.
• YouhaveinstalledanewsystemcomponentthatrequiresfurtherBIOSsettingsorupdate.
Inappropriate BIOS settings may result to instability or boot failure. We strongly recommend that
you change the BIOS settings only with the help of a trained service personnel.
Quickly enter the BIOS
Windows® 8.1 boot time is quite fast, so we developed the following ways for you to quickly access
the BIOS:
• PressthepowerbuttonforatleastfoursecondstoshutdownyourDesktopPC,thenpressthe
powerbuttonagaintoturnyourDesktopPCbackon,andpress<Del>duringPOST.
• WhenyourDesktopPCiso,disconnect the power cord from your Desktop PC’s power
connector. Reconnect the power cord and press the power button to turn on your Desktop PC.
Press <Del>duringPOST.
POST (Power-On Self Test) is a series of software controlled diagnostic tests that run when you
turn on your Desktop PC.

Using Windows® 10
Starting for the first time
When you start your computer for the first time, a series of screens appear to guide you in
configuring the basic settings of your Windows® 10 operating system.
To start your Desktop PC for the first time:
1. Press the power button on your Desktop PC. Wait for a few minutes until the setup screen
appears.
2. From the setup screen, pick your region and language that you want to use on your desktop
PC.
3. Carefully read the License Terms, then tap I Accept.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to configure the following basic items:
• Personalize
• Getonline
• Settings
• Youraccount
5. Wait until Windows® 10 finishes installing the apps and system settings. After the installation,
the Windows® 10 desktop appears.

Taskbar
Windows® 10 comes with the standard taskbar, which stores all your currently running apps or
items in the background.
Unpinning apps from the taskbar
1. From the Start screen or taskbar, right-click the app you want to unpin.
2. Click Unpin from Start or Unpin this program from taskbar to remove the app from the
Start screen or taskbar.
Using the Task View
When you have several running apps, you can click from the taskbar to display all your
running apps, and click on an app or item to launch it.
If task view is disabled, click >Show Task View button to display the task view icon .

Snap feature
The Snap feature displays about four apps or more in one screen, allowing you to work or switch
among apps.

Use your Desktop PC’s mouse or keyboard to activate Snap onscreen.
